Piano Trio (with whistles)

Piano Trio (with whistles), which was commissioned by the Deal Festival, was premiered by the fantastic trio of Maksim Štšura (piano), Michael Foyle (violin) and Raphael Lang last Friday. Here is a live recording I made at the concert at at the John Shipton Memorial Concert at St George’s Church in Deal. Many thanks to the trio, Markus Kinch for his photos and to all at the Deal Festival!

Blog about ‘The National Loneliness’

I’ve written a post for the Southampton Music Department blog about the recent performance of The National Loneliness by the London Sinfonietta, featuring Luke Wright and Juliet Fraser. I ended up conducting my piece and works by Emma-Ruth Richards and Jordan Hunt, which was really fun. Was great to write a new work with Luke and I hope we can work together again very soon.

London Sinfonietta Commission

I’ve been commissioned by the London Sinfonietta to write a new piece for solo tuba and distortion pedal. My new work, The Thing, will be performed by David Powell alongside four other new solo works at the British Film Institute as part of ‘Alternative Visions’ on 10th December at 6.30pm. The new pieces will be played alongside new films by student artists from Central Saint St Martins. The other featured composers are Christopher Mayo, Luke Styles, Deborah Pritchard and Jacob Thompson-Bell. Booking info.

Riot Ensemble Commission

I’m delighted to have been selected by the Riot Ensemble to compose a new piece for Juice Vocal Ensemble. Australian composer Holly Harrison and myself have been chosen from 126 applications to the ensemble’s 2014 Call for Scores. I’m looking forward to composing a new piece for the fabulous vocal trio for performance in November!

Selected as BBC Symphony Orchestra and Sound and Music Embedded Artist

I’ve been selected as one of three composers for the SAM Embedded Residency with the BBC SO. The other composers are Tom Coult and Aaron Holloway-Nahum.

We will write pieces for the orchestra over the coming year, which will be performed and recorded at Maida Vale in November 2013. We will also get the chance to try out some of our ideas in workshops early in 2013. This is obviously an amazing opportunity to take some risks and try some things out, and pretty special to be selected in such a competitive atmosphere!
