SUMMARY:Album Launch Party: TOO MANY SWEETS
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to a celebration of composer Benjamin Oliver‘s first portrait album TOO MANY SWEETS\, released in April 2024 by Birmingham Record Company (distributed by NMC). The album features artists including Ensemble Saxologie (Montreal)\, Riot Ensemble\, Clíodna Shanahan & Dorothy Chan (New York). \nThe show\, introduced by Matthew Shlomowitz\, will feature: Yshani Perinpanayagam giving the world premiere of album opener Drip Feeder (2022) for piano and electronics; screenings of two films featuring Ben’s music by Alys Scott-Hawkins (‘ANIL SOOD’\, commissioned London Sinfonietta) and Moe Myat May Zarchi (‘MOON LANDING (VERSION 2.0 LONGGYI’)\, commissioned Phantom Limb); and Ben performing a new vocal-piano-electronics version of his Love Letters (2023) song cycle with British soul sensation Hannah Williams. \nAs with the album you can expect “filthy crooked grooves and shameless flirtations with the nearest triad” and the sound of bespoke low-memory synthesisers designed and built by chipmusic composer Blake Troise (aka PROTODOME). \nPlus some sugary treats…

SUMMARY:Pythagoras' Toolkit - La Boîte à outils de Pythagore 2024
DESCRIPTION:‘Pythagoras’ Toolkit’ returns to Montreal for a second group of performances\, following the successful premiere run in March 2023. \nLegend has it that one day Pythagoras was astonished by the sounds that blacksmiths made when they struck their pieces of metal: the sounds were rich\, varied\, sometimes harmonious\, sometimes discordant. When he returned home\, the Greek thinker hastened to explore sound and invent new instruments. \nIn this co-creation by Rachel Warr (Dotted Line Theatre) and Benjamin Oliver\, performed by the musicians of Paramirabo\, our hero\, the modern-day Pythagoras\, invites children families to follow him in her surreal\, amusing and even danceable experiments. \nA Paramirabo production\, co presented by Le Vivier\, Bach Before Bedtime and Une école montréalaise pour tous.

SUMMARY:The Driver
DESCRIPTION:The Driver narrates his life from behind the wheel\, taking in the ring roads\, flyovers\, service stations\, leisure parks\, motels and lay-bys of England. As he drives\, he keeps an eye on the past through the rear-view mirror. \nLuke Wright‘s words are set to music by composer Benjamin Oliver and their work is performed by the Hartley Loop Orchestra in this world premiere performance. The music combines orchestral sonorities\, at times referencing English medieval polyphony and music by Purcell and Parry\, with the familiar sounds heard within the environment of a car. \nWright’s narrative is both a travelogue of England’s least glamorous places and the story of a break-up\, a love poem to being away and our ability to keep on going. It’s sad\, celebratory and caustic with all the squalor and romance the road has to offer.

SUMMARY:Pythagoras' Toolkit - La Boîte à outils de Pythagore
DESCRIPTION:Legend has it that one day Pythagoras was astonished by the sounds that blacksmiths made when they struck their pieces of metal: the sounds were rich\, varied\, sometimes harmonious\, sometimes discordant. When he returned home\, the Greek thinker hastened to explore sound and invent new instruments. \nIn this co-creation by Rachel Warr (Dotted Line Theatre) and Benjamin Oliver\, performed by the musicians of Paramirabo\, our hero\, the modern-day Pythagore\, invites children aged 3 to 12 (but also adults) to follow him in his surreal\, amusing and even danceable experiments. \nA Paramirabo production\, co presented by Le Vivier\, Bach Before Bedtime and Festival de Casteliers.
